Terminology

Phytoremediation is the use of plants to uptake contaminants within the soil, air or water.

Additional terminology in the field:

Accumulator/ phytoaccumulator– plants which accumulate contaminants from the soil, air or water

Bioaccumulator-

Chelating Agent-

Co-hyperaccumulator-

Excluder Plant-

Hyperaccumulator– plants which take up more contaminants from the soil, air or water

Indicator– plants which indicate through color that a contaminant is in the soil, air or water

Phytodegradation– plants which break apart or degrade a contaminant or pollutant

Phytodesalination-

Phytoextraction– plants which take in the contaminant to the roots, stem or leaves

Phytoscreening-

Phytosociology-

Phytostabilization– plants which hold the contaminant in place (stabilize it) but do not take it in

Precipitator– plants which prepare the site for further stages of growth and accumulation of tolerants

Rhizodegradation-

Rhizofiltration-

Rhizoremediation-

Tolerant– plants which are able to tolerate and grow with the contaminants on site

Volatization/ phytovolization-

There are multiple people beyond me who help to make this database run and grow. They include: Kyla Witz, Jennifer Russo, and Michael Naughton most notably. The phytoremediation society has also been generous with research for updating this database, as well some members who gave early reviews of it. Please feel free to contact me with more studies, research or questions about phytoremediation or how it works on different sites. Stevie@StevieFamulari.net
